Amersham Health is a market-leading global provider of in vivo medical diagnostic products for the early and accurate detection of disease. Our products are injected into the body to improve pictures obtained during medical scans, and are focused on three areas of growing clinical need - cardiology, neurology and cancer. Today our products are primarily used to aid in the diagnosis of anatomical and functional abnormalities of soft tissues and organs within the body. Increasingly, however, we are developing products that detect changes in cells at the molecular level. Such changes usually occur well before symptoms or functional changes become apparent.

The use of medical diagnostics is growing in importance as populations age and the cost of healthcare continues to rise. Age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, stroke and heart failure represent the highest cost burden to healthcare systems in industrialised nations. There is tremendous pressure to develop tests that can assist in earlier diagnosis and aid selection of the most appropriate treatment in order to reduce costs and improve the prognosis for patients.

Amersham Health is the market leader in medical diagnostic imaging, with a 38 per cent global market share. We provide products for all major imaging modalities: X-ray including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and radiopharmaceutical imaging.

We are also a major provider of radiotherapy products for the treatment of prostate cancer, thyroid cancer and pain palliation in metastatic bone disease. The major focus is on brachytherapy, which involves the implantation of radioactive iodine or palladium seeds in the prostate gland for the treatment of prostate cancer. We recently merged our brachytherapy business with Galil Medical to create the world's leading prostate cancer therapy marketing and sales organisation. Amersham owns 75 per cent of this joint venture.
