In June 2000, I was pleased to provide the foreword for Nycomed
Amersham’s first public Review of Health, Safety and the Environment
(HSE) following the company’s creation through mergers in 1997.
Two years on, following further corporate restructuring, our company
is now Amersham plc, with two wholly owned businesses, Amersham
Biosciences and Amersham Health, each world leaders in their fields.
Our company has grown in both financial and production terms and
it is against this backdrop that I am particularly pleased to introduce
this Environment and Social Report.
It is clear that many of our stakeholders expect to see evidence
of our corporate social responsibility, not only in HSE but also
in areas such as employment practices, corporate governance, human
rights, social interaction and support for the communities and society
in which we operate.
Amersham is working towards embracing a comprehensive approach
to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and we will report on our
progress again in two years time. We know that the continued success
and prosperity of our business requires that we play an active role
in working with all our stakeholders. We also recognise that it
is more important than ever that businesses demonstrate that they
are accountable, operating ethically, considerately and in the long
term, sustainably.
We will continue to progress our work in CSR during 2002 and 2003
and we will not let slip our policy to improve our performance in
matters relating to HSE where we still have targets to meet and
key environmental impacts to reduce. When we report again in 2004,
I am confident that our environmental performance will have improved
further and that our employees, neighbours, customers and shareholders
will see that at Amersham, we take our responsibilities to society
very seriously.
